Maryvale Senior Breaks School Record in Big Home Win

The Maryvale Varsity Boys Basketball team ran away with the 95-44 victory against the Camelback Spartans Friday night.

Maryvale Senior Guard David Jaramillo took the spotlight by exploding for 32 points, which included 10 three-pointers. That mark from behind the arc broke the record for most three-pointers in a single game in school history. The previous record was six.

Jaramillo is expected to start, along with Maryvale’s four other seniors, on February 11 against Trevor Browne for Senior Night.

“I look forward to seeing that, seeing the love that they receive and sending them out the right way,” said Maryvale head coach Jeremy Smith.

“We still anticipate the playoffs, and play-in or whatever scenario we have after that”, added Smith. “But we want to celebrate [the seniors] the right way and send them out on a high note.”

The other players expected to start on Senior Night include G Jadon Cuen, PG Abram Salazar, G Jose Villa and G Adrian Stubbs.

The Panthers latest home win improves their Region record to 5-1, good enough to keep first place in the 6A Metro Region.

Quarter-By-Quarter Recap

By the end of the first quarter, Maryvale had already took a commanding 24-7 lead. Freshman SF Keith Harrison had outscored Camelback by himself, leading all scorers with eight points heading into the second quarter.

The Spartans only scored 10 more points in the second quarter, while the Panthers added 30 more to their score to make it 54-17. Jaramillo also caught fire before halftime. He made four three-point shots and finished with 14 points in the quarter alone.

Maryvale scored 30 points once again in the third quarter behind five more three-pointers from Jaramillo. Camelback had their highest scoring quarter with 18, but by then it was too little too late.

Maryvale only outscored Camelback 11-9 in the final frame, but it was still enough to keep the victory. Camelback’s leading scorer for the night was Sophomore SG Isael Rodriguez who finished with 12 points.
